Mr. Steel’s personal journey is inspired by the style of urban graffiti from his city of Bologna Italy. Also the metal boxes of spray color, metal trains in the city, his love for graffiti colors, and the diversity of styles in hip hop culture has inspired him to create works of art.

I also had the chance to chat with innkeepers Fred & Janet Strackhouse.

They own  the charming historical 300 year old Stockton Inn, nestled in the quaint town of Stockton, New Jersey.

The historic Stockton Inn has an elegant restaurant, a rustic tavern, and cozy overnight rooms with many unique historic touches. Fine dining is served in the exquisite Mural Rooms with fireside seating during the colder months, and expands to the Glass Room as spring and summer approaches. In the warmest months of the year, savor your meal and your surroundings and dine along side a waterfall on our beautiful outside patio

At The Stockton Inn, history abounds. The Murals in the original dining rooms were painted by local artists during the depression in exchange for room & board for their families. Each of the murals depict a historic scene or event from the surrounding region. The Glass Dining Room has a very unique and historic Silver Dollar floor and the Tavern, or “Farmer’s Bar” has the original, molded tin ceiling, and fine mahogany wood detail throughout.

Guest Appearances included Fashion Model Denise Dietrichs as a featured top 20 Victoria Secret Model on the Angel Tour and world renowned Celebrity Photographer Mr. Shane Gritzinger.

Hugo Boss and Harpers Bazaar Celebrate the Launch of Vintage Cocktails

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Hello darlings,

hugo-boss.jpg

Celebrity Photographer Ivan K. McCartney pose for a photo-op at the launch for “Vintage Cocktail” at Hugo Boss

Welcome back to Cognac’s Corner Magazine.  Hugo Boss and Harpers Bazaar celebrated the Launch of the new coffee table book “Vintage Cocktail” published by Assouline Publishing.

Cognac chats with Author Brian Van Flandern

For the past ten years, Assouline Publishing has created fine illustrated books, luxury editions and an exquisite gift line dedicated to fashion, photography, art and design.

Guests enjoyed an evening of vintage cocktails and lounge music performed by Brian Newman.

Brian Newman is a trumpet player and singer originally from Cleveland, Ohio. After finishing at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, music led him to New York City. For the past six years he has been performing at a variety of venues such as The Bowery Ballroom, Gold Bar, The Bowery Electric, Duane Park, Corio, Abron Arts Center, Glasslands, Greenhouse, Birdland, Ella, The Cotton Club Tokyo, Music Hall of Williamsburg, Studio at Webster Hall, The Zipper Factory, Southpaw, The Metropolitan Club, Shrine, Dizzy’s Club, The Blue Note, Le Poisson Rouge, Corio, Duane Park, The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, The Supper Club, The Slipper Room, S.O.B’s and many other fine New York City establishments. Performing a medley of genres with some of the most talented performers in the city. He has been called “brilliant” by Stephen Holden of the New York Times and as a band leader and a sideman, he continues to perform throughout NYC and abroad adding his personal and stylistic touch to every single note.

Renowned for their highly original graphic concept, Assouline books are a work of art that capture culture and brings it to life. The spirit and ’savoir faire’ of these works have contributed to the creation of a unique and eclectic, chic and elegant brand that is immediately identifiable. Today, Assouline publications, special editions and gift items can be found around the globe in select high end retail locations and Assouline boutiques. As part of Assouline’s positioning as a luxury brand, we opened our first wholly owned boutique in Paris at the end of 2005.  Given the success of this first Assouline shop, the second flagship boutique was opened at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, New York in the Fall of 2008.

The two high-end boutiques were spurned on by Assouline’s desire to showcase its concept of ‘books as gifts’. This led to the creation of a full retail program of strategic partnerships to open Assouline branded corners around the world.

Today these Assouline corners include Saks Fifth Avenue with four shop in shop locations planned for yearend 2009.  The first, New York, was launched in May of 2009; In San Francisco, Wilkes Bashford since 2007 and the latest corner was launched in San Francisco at Neiman Marcus in April of 2009.

Furthermore, Assouline launched two shops in Miami in partnership with Books & Books, one of the leading bookstores in the United States, at the end of 2008. These shops are located in Coral Gables and Miami Beach.  Shops already existing are in Toronto at Teatro Verde, Librissime in Montreal, Hong Kong with Lane Crawford, Dubai with Harvey Nichols, Zai in Qatar, Mexico City with A Editores and Saks Mexico City.  There are two more stores planned before the end of 2009 which will be Assouline stores : Los Angeles in the Summer and Las Vegas, Citycenter in the Fall.

Assouline also opened a corner boutique at the auction house Sotheby’s headquarters in New York early May of 2009.

This exciting new publication “Vintage Cocktails” explores the lost art of mixing the perfect drink with elegance and simplicity.

I had a chance at the event to chat with the author Brian Van Flandern.

World reknowned mixologist Brian Van Flandern was professional bartender in New York City for over 18 years. In 2004 he opened Chef Thomas Keller’s Michelin three star (NY TIMES four star) restaurant  PER SE as the head mixologist. Applying Chef Keller’s philosophy of flavor profiling to cocktails Brian Van Flandern created dozens of well-balanced food friendly cocktails. Inspired by Francesco LaFranconi and working side by side with master sommelier Paul Roberts, his recreation of the classic Gin and Tonic (he makes his own tonic water with quinine powder imported from Brazil) has garnered national attention.

Per Se provided Brian with the fundamental tools to open CREATIVE COCKTAIL CONSULTANTS, a consulting firm dedicated to creating cutting edge cocktails lists and training professional bartenders in the art of mixology.  Mr. Van Flandern has designed cocktail lists for the finest restaurants and resorts.  His unique recipes are served in every major port of call in the world.

His cocktails have been mentioned or featured in THE NEW YORK TIMES, GOURMET MAGAZINE, THE WASHINGTON POST, TIME OUT NY, NEW YORK MAGAZINE and FAST COMPANY. The THE WALL STREET JOURNAL and FOOD ARTS MAGAZINE have written feature articles on Mr. Van Flandern and CHEERS MAGAZINE listed Brian as one of America’s Ten ‘Top Shelf Bartenders’.

2006 was the 200th anniversary of the cocktail. In response, BOLS Liqueurs of Amsterdam held the BOLS 200 Masters International Championship where Brian was ranked the number two bartender in the world. Additionally, Mr. Van Flandern is a graduate of the first B.A.R. (beverage alcohol research) class run by spirit experts Paul Pacult, Dave Wondrich, Steve Olsen, Doug Frost and Dale DeGroff. Brian’s expansive knowledge of spirits and cocktail history combined with his experience at PER SE allow him to lecture as an expert in fine dining beverage standards.
