Renowned for their highly original graphic concept, Assouline books are a work of art that capture culture and brings it to life. The spirit and ’savoir faire’ of these works have contributed to the creation of a unique and eclectic, chic and elegant brand that is immediately identifiable. Today, Assouline publications, special editions and gift items can be found around the globe in select high end retail locations and Assouline boutiques. As part of Assouline’s positioning as a luxury brand, we opened our first wholly owned boutique in Paris at the end of 2005.  Given the success of this first Assouline shop, the second flagship boutique was opened at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, New York in the Fall of 2008.

The two high-end boutiques were spurned on by Assouline’s desire to showcase its concept of ‘books as gifts’. This led to the creation of a full retail program of strategic partnerships to open Assouline branded corners around the world.

Today these Assouline corners include Saks Fifth Avenue with four shop in shop locations planned for yearend 2009.  The first, New York, was launched in May of 2009; In San Francisco, Wilkes Bashford since 2007 and the latest corner was launched in San Francisco at Neiman Marcus in April of 2009.

Furthermore, Assouline launched two shops in Miami in partnership with Books & Books, one of the leading bookstores in the United States, at the end of 2008. These shops are located in Coral Gables and Miami Beach.  Shops already existing are in Toronto at Teatro Verde, Librissime in Montreal, Hong Kong with Lane Crawford, Dubai with Harvey Nichols, Zai in Qatar, Mexico City with A Editores and Saks Mexico City.  There are two more stores planned before the end of 2009 which will be Assouline stores : Los Angeles in the Summer and Las Vegas, Citycenter in the Fall.

Assouline also opened a corner boutique at the auction house Sotheby’s headquarters in New York early May of 2009.

This exciting new publication “Vintage Cocktails” explores the lost art of mixing the perfect drink with elegance and simplicity.

I had a chance at the event to chat with the author Brian Van Flandern.

World reknowned mixologist Brian Van Flandern was professional bartender in New York City for over 18 years. In 2004 he opened Chef Thomas Keller’s Michelin three star (NY TIMES four star) restaurant  PER SE as the head mixologist. Applying Chef Keller’s philosophy of flavor profiling to cocktails Brian Van Flandern created dozens of well-balanced food friendly cocktails. Inspired by Francesco LaFranconi and working side by side with master sommelier Paul Roberts, his recreation of the classic Gin and Tonic (he makes his own tonic water with quinine powder imported from Brazil) has garnered national attention.

Per Se provided Brian with the fundamental tools to open CREATIVE COCKTAIL CONSULTANTS, a consulting firm dedicated to creating cutting edge cocktails lists and training professional bartenders in the art of mixology.  Mr. Van Flandern has designed cocktail lists for the finest restaurants and resorts.  His unique recipes are served in every major port of call in the world.

His cocktails have been mentioned or featured in THE NEW YORK TIMES, GOURMET MAGAZINE, THE WASHINGTON POST, TIME OUT NY, NEW YORK MAGAZINE and FAST COMPANY. The THE WALL STREET JOURNAL and FOOD ARTS MAGAZINE have written feature articles on Mr. Van Flandern and CHEERS MAGAZINE listed Brian as one of America’s Ten ‘Top Shelf Bartenders’.

2006 was the 200th anniversary of the cocktail. In response, BOLS Liqueurs of Amsterdam held the BOLS 200 Masters International Championship where Brian was ranked the number two bartender in the world. Additionally, Mr. Van Flandern is a graduate of the first B.A.R. (beverage alcohol research) class run by spirit experts Paul Pacult, Dave Wondrich, Steve Olsen, Doug Frost and Dale DeGroff. Brian’s expansive knowledge of spirits and cocktail history combined with his experience at PER SE allow him to lecture as an expert in fine dining beverage standards.
