I also had the chance to interview Singer, Performer Nikki Armstrong.

Cognac chats with Singer/Performer Nikki Armstrong

Singer/Performer Nikki Armstrong began her performing career as a dancer and actress at age 11. She was inspired by the great jazz singers, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee as well as the great Soul and R&B artists, James Brown and Tina Turner, and finally in her late 20’s Nikki decided to commit to singing. She has studied music and voice in Boston , LA and New York , most notably with the great arranger Hal Schaefer (Peggy Lee, Marilyn Monroe). Writing and doing session work in Los Angles and Sydney , Australia for the first few years was fun, but it was live performing she craved and New York was the place to be.

For the past 10 years Nikki has performed regularly all around the New York Tri-State area with her bands, Whole Lotta Blues and The Nikki Armstrong Project . As featured guest vocalist, she has performed and or recorded with such artists as Melvin Sparks (Acid Jazz Guitarist) and the Great Les Paul (Father of the Electric Guitar). As a voice coach for over 10 years, Nikki delivers performance workshops and singer showcases in the Tri-state area.
An important voice in the New York area Blues and Jazz scene Nikki is on the board of directors of the New York Blues and Jazz Society as Musician’s Liaison; coordinating, producing, and performing in successful Blues and Jazz events for venues such as Birdland in NYC, Sirius Radio as well as benefits for NOLA. In 2007 Nikki became a Deejay on the air with her own show Blues in the Grooves broadcasting every Wednesday afternoon on WFDU, 89.1FM from 1pm to 3:45pm. She also runs a weekly Blues Jam and has been doing so for the last 10 years.
Nikki has four independent CD releases and is working on another CD of all original material due to release in 2009. Her band Whole Lotta Blues is composed of Jason Green on guitar, Rob Chaseman on sax, A.J. Hager on bass, John McCann on drums and Juan Pertuz on percussion. Nikki and crew are all musically accomplished and perform everything from blues, funk, rock, soul, and pop covers, to jazz standards as well as originals. They can be seen most regularly at Lucille’s at BB Kings. Nikki Armstrong & Whole Lotta Blues have been the featured opening act for The Commitments, Joan Osborne, Dave Mason, Hubert Sumlin, Parliament Funkadelic, to name a few.

“ The blues as Nikki sings them come mixed with jazz, pop, and folk rock, with a warm, rich contralto voice that she colors over a wide spectrum from intimate growls and passionate whispers to long haunting ballad lines, and a sparkling sense of fun!” — – Michael Lydon (Founding Editor Rolling Stone Magazine and Author, Ray Charles: Man and Music )

Cognac chats with Talent Agent/Film Producer Archer King and Director/Writer Sophia Robbins at the Screening of “The Haunted Spirit” at the Big Apple Film Festival Cinematography by Bill-Lee Lanndis

On Friday November 6th I attended the Big Apple Film Festival with Actor Bill-Lee Lanndis for a special screening of “The Haunted Spirit,” produced by Film Producer Archer King and directed by Sophia Robbins.

The film’s synopsis is centered around a young woman’s relationship with her friends, family and lover.

What is a girl to do when her friends and neighbors
say her boyfriend is no good, but she continues to believe in him and tries to make her relationship work. Julia with the help of a statue of the Egyptian God Anubis, finds a solution for Jordan.

Director : Sophia Robbins
Written by Anna Orkoulas & Sophia Robbins
Produced by Archer King Ltd

After the screening I had a chance to interview the producer Archer King and the writer/director Sophia Robbins.

Celebrating over 50 years as a Corporation, and an agent (one of the longest held franchises in New York), Archer King is as energetic and active as any agent could be, with a history as an actor, producer, distributor, film packager and entertainment consultant.

Archer was an actor for a short time, with work including the Broadway Production “Of Summer Night” in 1939. This was followed by a world -wide tour courtesy Uncle Sam and World War II. Again a civilian, Archer returned to the theatre to produce on Broadway a number of plays including “Two Blind Mice” By Sam Spewack and finally, in 1952, he settled down as an agent with the Louis Shurr Agency.

Never one to stay still very long, Archer forged out on his own and incorporated his own agency in 1957. He is credited with discovering such talents as James Dean, Jason Robards, Jack Warden, Martin Sheen, Paul Mazursky, Elizabeth Montgomery Tommy Tune and Ron Howard. He also represented such clients as John Cassavettes, Broderick Crawford, Bette Midler, Dorothy Malone, Alexis Smith and Tommy Tune.

During our interview I inquired how she met Archer King.  “I was looking for a theatrical Agent, and I was recommended to contact Archer,” she enthusiastically responded.

It was a night of haunting entertainment as the band Temple Hill pulled out their bag of tricks or treats to perform “live” at the hottest scariest place in town at the Bitter End on Bleecker Street, Greenwich Village in New York City on Halloween night.

Before they rocked the house I had a chance to chat with band founders and twin brothers  Jon Paul and Rich Molfetta.  They expressed their enthusiasm and delight in performing. “What’s your favorite song,” I asked.  “Red Sexy Demon is our favorite new Temple Hill song,” admitted Rich Mofetta. “Who wrote the song,” I inquired.  “It’s a collaboration. Our lead guitarist brought us this ridiculously hot riff, Mr. Bob  Studley, and we kind of played with it a little bit, he went back changed it up and we wrote some melody over it, put in some lyrics and made a marriage,” revealed Jon Paul.

This month the band will be playing at Tommy Fox’s in Bergenfeld New Jersey.

The Divine Ms. M Host the 2009 Hulaween Bash at the Waldorf

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Hello darlings, welcome back to Cognac’s Corner Magazine,

Cognac chats with the stars at the Hulaween Event at the Waldorf Astoria- Video by Mauro Botero

This year Halloween was truly more a treat for me than than a trick.

I celebrated all weekend but my favorite event was 14th Annual Hulaween Event hosted by Bette Midler at the Waldorf Astoria.

This year the Divine Ms. M was scantily dressed in a silver duster, hot pink corset, Hot Pink feathers, black plumes and luscious thick lashes, “I asked the head of my wardrobe department in Las Vegas, Fred Morales, to design a costume for me,” Bette Midler expressed, “I wanted to go as a Las Vegas Show Goul.” Bette and I chatted on the red carpet about the event, her costume and how important the New York Restoration Project really is.

New York Restoration Project (NYRP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to reclaiming and restoring New York City parks, community gardens and open space. In partnership with the City of New York, NYRP is also leading MillionTreesNYC – an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017.

Notable celebrites that attended included, Master of Ceremonies, Judy Gold, Gloria Gaynor, Martha Stewart, Mayor Blumberg, Fashion Designer Michael Kors, Whoopi Goldberg, Katie Couric and Austrialian Singer Sia. The fabulous evening was rounded off by a performance of Crosby, Stills, & Nash
