At the Date in the City Event I had the pleasure of interviewing Liz Hopfan, Executive Director of www.freeartsny.org in New York City.

Free Arts NYC provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential.

Free Arts NYC programs inspire children to re-imagine their worlds and transform their lives through the creative arts.

With the help of dedicated and caring volunteer mentors, Free Arts NYC delivers creative arts programs directly to low income, homeless, abused and neglected children.

We partner with group homes, shelters, schools and community centers to give children the opportunity to express themselves in a supportive environment in order to develop communication and trust. Our programs and the relationships they foster help children and families experience new levels of hope and creativity.

Free Arts NYC volunteers and facilitators give all of the children and families we work with a high level of personal attention. Our volunteer to child ratio is often 1:1 and, at most, 1:3. We are able to reach these ratios without exorbitant expense because of our unique volunteer model.

Since 1998, founding Director Liz Hopfan has taken the nonprofit from a budget of $100,000 to over $2,000,000. Free Arts NYC volunteers have now served over 24,000 children and families.

PROGRAMS:

Free Arts Days
Weekly Mentor Program
Parents and Children Together with Art (PACT)
Multicultural Arts Camp
Cultural Enrichment

LiL’ Joe CEO was born and rasied in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Growing up he developed a passion for music and break dancing, which eventaully lead to his hip-hop career. Lil’ Joe put out his first album: LiL’Joe CEO “The Sicilian” Official MixTape Part 1 in 2006 and is currently in the studio working on his next album. Joe is acting, producing, writing soundtracks and filming a reality show about his life and his Tattoo shop. (Kings County Tattoo Co. Brooklyn, NY.) He will be handing out copies of his album to attendees, and also providing a basket of electronics valued at over $1,000 that were raffled off.
