Hamptons guest serenaded along with Brazilizian singing sensation Bebel Gilberto to the tunes of classic bossa nova as they supported The ACE, The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless.

Cognac interviews at the Sunflower Brazilian Event at the Home of Henry Buhl in Southampton – Video by Michael Wellbrock

Internationally acclaimed Brazilian singing superstar Bebel Gilberto performed at the “Brazilian Sunflowers” event in Southampton, August 21, to benefit the Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE). This was the only appearance of Bebel performing in the Hamptons for the summer. The event took place at the Southampton estate of ACE Founder Henry Buhl. Celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson caused some Techno trauma mixing Techno with Bebel’s bossa nova causing some controversay when the cops were called. Guests at the event were annoyed with her choice of music and she was shooed away before the cops contined to let the event go on!

In any event the fundraiser was the hightlight of the evening and Hamptonites came to give their support.

Caroline Lieberman, Former New York Lt. Governor Betsy McCaughy, Hampton’s Sheet Editor Joan Jedell, Jean Shafiroff, Artist Peter Tunney, Ramona Singer, Billionaire, John Paulson, Hampton’s Builder, Edward Bulgin, Restaurateur, Jeffrey Chodorow and his wife Linda were some of the important personalities that attended.

Founded in 1997, ACE works with recovering homeless men and women throughout New York City, providing job training, work experience and a lifetime support network to help our clients achieve their goals and establish economic independence. We work closely with the neighborhoods we serve, building a sense of community and involving local partners in our mission to end homelessness.

Cognac Wellerlane interviews at “Celebration of Our Bays”

Mrs. Peter Salm graciously hosted a cocktail event at her home, The Port of Missing Men, in Southampton.

The event supported our waterways for Peconic Baykeeper.

Cognac interviews Marine Biologist, Peconic Baykeeper & President, Kevin McAllister

As a grassroots organization, Peconic Baykeeper is only as strong as their constituency. They work to represent their shared interests in protecting our bay waters and ensuring these assets for future generations. Share their dedication to the bays, harbors and creeks of Long Island by becoming a member today.

These are there recent accomplishments:

# Established a vessel sewage No-Discharge Zone for the Peconic and South Shore estuaries.
# Identified the presence of toxic batteries at several sites on the bay bottom, previously discarded by the U.S. Coast Guard. This investigation led to a Coast Guard clean-up, and a commitment to restore any other similar dump sites found in area waters.
# Compelled Suffolk County government to perform an Environmental Impact Study on the effects of mosquito control practices that include spraying pesticides and ditch digging in wetlands. This resulted in the introduction of legislation to vastly limit the use of the pesticide Methoprene in Suffolk County’s salt marshes, discontinue the practice of ditching wetlands, and the greater public oversight of its wetland management program.
# Moved New York State to designate the Forge River as “Impaired Waters”, an unfortunate distinction that is the catalyst for corrective action.
# Helped to save Crab Creek on Shelter Island from a plan to drastically dredge the creek. Challenging this project saved one of the Peconic Estuary’s aesthetically pristine and biologically productive shallow water creeks, preserving it for generations to come.
# Provided technical expertise while serving on the Suffolk County’s Citizen Advisory Committee and Brookhaven National Lab’s Peconic River Working Group for the purpose of developing a comprehensive clean-up plan for the removal of contamination in the Peconic River.
# In coordination with Southampton Town, established a hard clam spawner sanctuary in Scallop Pond, Southampton. The purpose of which is to re-populate area waters with clams and to possibly serve as a biological control to the onset of harmful algal blooms.
# Successfully challenged the development of a large-scale marina in Shinnecock Bay. Project approval would have led to the destruction of nearly 5 acres of productive bay bottom and resulted in water quality degradation, including shellfish closures from boat discharges.
# Introduced the concept of Bayscaping to the region. Bayscaping incorporates progressive landscaping and property management practices to enhance habitat values and benefit local water quality.
# They have received regional recognition of Peconic Baykeeper’s environmental achievements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Promote Long Island, Sierra Club, Great South Bay Audubon, and South Fork Natural History Museum.

Located at 290 Montauk Highway, Rugosa Restaurant is truly a treasure of Modern American Cuisine with a touch of French flair added.

A native of Massapequa Long Island, Bill Mammes has cooked in Las Vegas and New Orleans before deciding to come back to his home and open up a fabulous restaurant in East Hampton, New York.

There is a wide array of wonderful dishes to choose from such as:

Pan Seared Porgy Fillet —
Red Pepper, Zucchini and Israeli Cous Cous with Bouillabaisse Sauce

Lavender and Dijon Crusted Halibut —
Asparagus, Fingerling Potatoes and Lavender Jus

Roasted Cod —
Cannellini Beans, Artichokes, Chorizo and Garlic in Artichoke Broth

Seared Long Island Duck Breast —
Turnips, Savoy Cabbage, Rhubarb and Rhubarb-Duck Jus

Pan Roasted Chicken Breast —
Spring Onions, Tomato Confit and Chicken-Earl Grey Jus

My favorite dishes included the savory starter of duck cannelloni, a tasty pasta packet flavorfully filled with duck confit, topped with mushrooms and for a real treat I tried the Roasted Lamb Loin, Braised Escarole, Raisin and Pinenut Tart with Lamb Sauce, It was magnificent.

Stella Shows Antiques & Design in the Hampton

August 18th, 2010

TV Host Cognac Wellerlane interviews at the Stella Shows Antiques & Design in the Hamptons – Video by Michael Wellbrock

I had the pleasure of interviewing Olivia Garay about her glamorous vintage jewels. One piece was bought from Jolie Gabor the famous mother of the Gabor sisters. You know darlings, Zsa Zsa, Eva and Magda.

She was best known as “Mama Jolie”, the mother of actresses/socialites Zsa Zsa Gabor, Eva Gabor and Magda Gabor.

Born as Jolie Kende (but called as “Jancsi”) in Budapest, she claimed to have been born in 1900, although her eldest daughter was born around 1915. According to researcher Piet Hein Honig, Jolie’s Budapest birth certificate indicates that she was actually born in 1896 to a Jewish family. It is believed that she had relatives who died during The Holocaust. In 1957, Jolie made an appearance as a mystery guest on the show What’s My Line?. Her line in 1957 was that she owned and operated a jewelry store.

Many of the jewels she carried were copies of more authentic pieces that were designed by Charles Winston son to Harry Winston. Olivia and I talked about the particular she showcased during our interview.

I also had the opportunity to chat with Gallery Owner Joern Lohmann

J. Lohmann Gallery specializes in European design and decorative arts primarily from the 1920s -1980s with an emphasis on German designers and artistic movements.

Founder Albert Sultan talked about his exciting company SULTANchic.com and SultanDesigns.com

The firm SULTANchic is the evolution of a passion. It is borne of an obsession and curiosity for life’s many exotic wonders—color, texture, and pattern. He creates the perfect design for your perfect decor.
